Delaware Mesothelioma Lawyers

Malignant mesothelioma is a tumor in the mesothelium, the thin double-layered membrane covering the chest cavity (pleura), the abdominal cavity (peritoneum) and the heart sac (pericardium). Mesothelioma is almost exclusively caused by exposure to asbestos, a mineral used through most of the twentieth century in manufacture, including in many Delaware companies.

Danger Asbestos Warning SignUnfortunately, the prognosis for mesothelioma is poor; however, early diagnosis significantly improves the prognosis. Symptoms of mesothelioma are often mistaken for symptoms of other upper respiratory disorders, which complicates diagnosis.

Malignant mesothelioma is categorized in four stages, much the same as other carcinomas. According to the TNM system (Tumor, Lymph Node, Metastasis), the four stages of cancer are:

  1. Mesothelioma of one side of the pleura and may have spread to the lung, pericardium or diaphragm on the same side. The lymph nodes are not cancerous.
  2. The nearby lymph nodes on same side of pleura are cancerous.
  3. The chest wall, esophagus, muscle, ribs, heart or other organs in chest on same side are cancerous. The lymph nodes are not necessarily involved.
  4. Distant metastases are involved including pleura, lungs, or lymph nodes on the other side of the chest or in the organs in the abdominal cavity or neck are involved.

The mesothelium contains a layer of cuboidal cells. When asbestos settles on the lung, it can penetrate the viscera of the pleura and then is carried to the pleural surface. On the pleural surface, the asbestos can form malignant plaques that lead to mesothelioma.
